Between the 1950s and late 1990s, asbestos was commonly incorporated into homes, schools, factories, offices, farms, military facilities, shipyards, and public buildings due to its fire resistance, strength, and insulating properties. Across Kent, asbestos containing materials were widely used in roofing sheets, textured coatings (such as Artex), floor tiles, pipe lagging, insulation boards (AIB), soffits, ceiling panels, and boiler insulation.

As awareness of the serious health risks associated with asbestos exposure increased during the 1980s and 1990s, the UK introduced stricter asbestos regulations before implementing a full ban on asbestos use in the United Kingdom.

Today, asbestos remains a common issue during refurbishment, demolition, and renovation projects across Kent. While asbestos materials are are generally safe if left undisturbed, professional surveys and controlled removal are essential to protect health and ensure compliance with current UK regulations.
