Throughout the 20th century, Thurrock experienced major industrial, commercial, and residential growth, particularly during the post war construction boom when asbestos was widely used across the UK building industry.

Due to Thurrock's strong links to shipping, manufacturing, logistics, and heavy industry along the River Thames, asbestos containing materials were commonly used in factories, warehouses, docks, workshops, power facilities, and industrial estates throughout the area. Asbestos was valued for its fire resistance, insulation properties, and durability.

In addition to industrial sites, many homes, schools, garages, offices, and public buildings constructed or refurbished in Thurrock between 1950s and late 1990s also incorporated asbestos materials. Common examples include textured coatings (Artex), asbestos cement roofing sheets, floor tiles, pipe lagging, insulation boards (AIB), soffits, and ceiling panels.

Many properties across Thurrock built before 2000 may still contain asbestos today, particular in older residential estates and industrial buildings. While asbestos was once considered a standard construction material, it is now recognised as a serious health risk if fibres are disturbed and inhaled.

As awareness of asbestos related illnesses increased during the 1980s and 1990s, the UK introduced increasingly strict regulations, eventually leading to a full ban on asbestos use in the UK.

Today, asbestos remains a common issue during refurbishment, demolition, and maintenance projects across Thurrock. Professional surveys and safe removal are essential to ensure compliance with current regulations and protect both workers and occupants.
